What Are Green Energy Credits?

Green Energy Credits (aka Green Certificates or Renewable Energy Certificates) are a way to support renewable energy in areas where it is not directly available.

The deal is, you can opt to choose a green energy option to offset the amount of energy (kilowatt-hours) your home or business uses for a small premium.

Though the energy you pay for does not directly power your home or business, it is delivered to the total energy infrastructure- increasing the demand for clean energy. It is trading off a few bucks for a direct vote for renewable energy- instead of electricity that is generated from fossil fuels like coal or nuclear energy.

Credits are also a great option for small businesses to offset energy where utilities do not offer renewable energy outside the residential sector.

Purchasing Green Credits/Certificates is a fixed way to support clean energy development and offset energy emissions. As purchases increase, so does the demand for more new, clean, renewable energy facilities across the country. The more we buy, the more they will make.

How They Work

Since it is physically impossible to deliver electrons from a wind farm directly to a home or business, renewable energy credits make wind power transactions possible. When a wind farm produces electricity, credits are issued to track the exact amount of power created. Selling renewable energy credits allows wind farms to be competitive with fossil fuels. Buying these credits transfers ownership of the wind power. This innovative system helps consumers and business buy wind power at a reasonable price.
